The Standing Committee on IT and Communications will meet social media firms on August 3, days after Meta apologised for briefly removing a video from the Prime Minister's Facebook account.

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Communications and Information Technology has summoned representatives of Meta, X, Google and Snapchat to appear before it on August 3 to discuss user privacy and public order.
This comes on a day when Meta briefly removed a video from Prime Minister Narendra Modi's official Facebook account before restoring it and apologising for the error.
Announcing the meeting in a post on X, committee chairperson Nishikant Dubey said the panel had called Meta (Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp), X, Snapchat and Google to explain "how the privacy of women, children, farmers, rural folks, labourers, and the general public will be protected" and how the platforms ensure "the government's public order".
The development comes after Meta on July 28 apologised for briefly restricting access to a video uploaded on PM Modi's Facebook page, saying the content had been "removed in error" and was subsequently restored.
The video, uploaded on July 23, featured the Prime Minister's first address to Gen Z during the 36-day Cockroach Janta Party (CJP)-led student protests.
The video was initially accompanied by a notice stating that access had been restricted in India due to a "legal request", triggering criticism from several BJP leaders. However, sources later said the restriction was the result of a temporary technical glitch and not a government request.
Separately, media reports said the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has also summoned Meta officials over the incident to seek an explanation for the temporary removal of the Prime Minister's video.
